Social Media Advertising Guide: Meta vs. TikTok vs. LinkedIn
Compare Meta, TikTok, and LinkedIn ads on cost, targeting, and best-fit business type — plus budgets, metrics, and how to pick your first platform.
Nearly every business owner we talk to asks the same question before spending a dollar on ads: which platform should I be on? The honest answer is that Meta, TikTok, and LinkedIn are not competitors so much as different tools. Each one wins for a specific type of offer, a specific customer value, and a specific kind of creative. Picking the wrong one is the single most expensive mistake we see in small business advertising.
This guide compares the three platforms side by side, then walks through how to choose, how much to budget, and what to measure so you know within 30 days whether the spend is working.
Side-by-side comparison
Cost ranges reflect what we typically see for small and mid-sized US advertisers. Your actual costs depend on industry, audience size, and creative quality.
| Platform | Best for | Typical CPM | Typical CPC | Strength | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Meta (Facebook + Instagram) | Local services, e-commerce, appointment-based businesses | $8–$18 | $0.70–$2.50 | Deepest interest and behavior targeting, cheapest reliable lead volume, best learning tools for small budgets | Creative fatigue is fast — plan on refreshing ads every 2–4 weeks |
| TikTok | Consumer brands, food and beverage, fitness, trend-driven offers | $5–$12 | $0.50–$1.50 | Lowest cost per impression and strong organic-style reach for native video | Requires genuine native video; polished commercials underperform badly |
| B2B services, high-ticket consulting, recruiting | $25–$60 | $6–$15 | Job title, company size, and industry targeting nothing else can match | Only worth the CPC when your customer lifetime value is in the thousands |
How to choose your first platform
Work through three questions in order. First, where does your customer actually spend attention? Second, what is one customer worth to you over a year? Third, what kind of creative can your team realistically produce every week? The platform that satisfies all three is your answer, and it is almost never all three platforms at once.
- Customer value under $500: Meta or TikTok. LinkedIn click costs will bury you.
- Customer value $500–$3,000: Meta first, TikTok as your second channel once cost per lead is stable.
- Customer value above $3,000 and B2B: LinkedIn, with Meta retargeting behind it.
- You can film on a phone weekly: TikTok becomes far more attractive, because native video is the entire game there.
Set a budget the algorithm can learn from
Every major ad platform needs roughly 30–50 conversion events per week before its optimization becomes reliable. That is the real reason small budgets feel random. If your cost per lead is $25, you need close to $1,000 per month on one platform to reach that threshold. Splitting $600 across three platforms guarantees that none of them ever learn.
Commit to a 30-day test window and resist the urge to change targeting every few days. Change creative, not structure.
Measure the three numbers that matter
- Cost per qualified lead — not cost per lead. Strip out the tire-kickers before you judge a campaign.
- Lead-to-call or lead-to-sale rate — this tells you whether the platform attracts the right person, not just a cheap click.
- Return on ad spend — revenue divided by spend over your actual sales cycle, not the 7-day window the dashboard defaults to.
If those three numbers move in the right direction over 30 days, add budget. If they do not, change the creative and offer before you blame the platform — in our experience creative and offer explain most of the gap between campaigns that work and campaigns that do not.
Frequently asked questions
Which social media platform should I advertise on first?
For most local and service businesses, start with Meta (Facebook and Instagram). It has the broadest audience, the lowest cost per lead, and the most forgiving learning curve on small budgets. Choose TikTok first only if your offer is visual and consumer-facing, and LinkedIn first only if you sell B2B with a customer value above roughly $3,000.
How much should I budget for social media ads?
Plan on a minimum of $30–$50 per day per platform for at least 30 days. Below that, the ad platform cannot gather enough conversion data to optimize, and results look random. One platform funded properly beats three platforms funded thinly.
Are TikTok ads cheaper than Facebook ads?
TikTok usually has a lower cost per thousand impressions and a lower cost per click, but Meta typically converts better for lead generation and purchases. Cheaper traffic is not cheaper customers — judge platforms on cost per booked call or cost per sale, not on CPM.
Why are LinkedIn ads so expensive?
LinkedIn charges a premium because you can target by job title, seniority, company size, and industry. A $12 click is a bargain if it reaches a decision maker for a $20,000 contract, and a waste if your average sale is $200.
What metrics actually tell me if my ads are working?
Track cost per qualified lead, lead-to-call rate, and return on ad spend. Impressions, reach, and engagement are diagnostics that explain results — they are not results.
